Poem

Touched by an Angel
by Maya Angelou
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

In the poem “Touched by an Angel” by Maya Angelou, the poet emphasized the theme of love. Love not only to the family and loved ones but as well as with other people. At first, Oskar felt pitiful towards the Jews, but as the days went by and as he witnessed the ruthlessness and tyranny of the Nazis, he learned to love the Jews who worked for him in his factory. He did not have second thoughts to save as many lives as he could even if it meant risking his life and losing all his possessions. Because of the love that he showed to the Schindlerjews, more than a thousand people lived and survived the horrifying assassination of the Jewish communities.
